What is a Commemoration Ball?

A commemoration Ball is held every three years by a small number of select Oxford colleges. They are, essentially, the biggest and best Balls to happen in Oxford. Christ Church’s, taking place on the 18th of June, 2022, will be a white tie Ball, and guests will dine, drink, and dance throughout the historic grounds of the college. For most undergraduates, this Ball will be your only college Ball during your time at Christ Church, and we hope it’ll be a night to treasure forever.

What is white tie?

White tie consists of either a black tailcoat and trousers, with a white waistcoat, wing collar shirt, and bowtie, or a full-length, formal evening dress. National dress is also permitted.

In order to be both economical and environmentally friendly, we would encourage you to look at other options beyond buying brand new attire. White tie is most usually hired, and done easily through many companies in Oxford. We have partnered with several to offer discounts for our guests, further details of which will be released closer to the time. Ballgowns can also be rented, for which we will similarly be collaborating with a hire company to offer discounts, as well as bought second hand from shops in Oxford. Our dress code is not themed.

What will the evening involve?

Whilst we can’t give away too much information about what to expect, your night will begin at sunset with a champagne reception in Tom Quad, along with canapés and fireworks. Then, guests will progress through the rest of the college grounds throughout the evening, where there’ll be a variety of food trucks, stages, performers, tents, mazes, bars, and more. Christ Church will, truly, be transformed. We’ll also have a dedicated chill-out area, and quieter zones, throughout the Ball, if that all sounds a bit overwhelming. The night will end as the sun comes up, when we’ll serve breakfast and Bloody Mary cocktails to those remaining, and take our Survivor’s Photo.

Will I need to buy food and drink when I’m in?

No! Your ticket covers absolutely everything. Once you’re in the Ball, you may feast and drink to your heart’s content, and revel throughout the night.

Are there any tickets left?

Unfortunately, we've sold out of all our tickets for the ball.

What are the add-ons for tickets?

We offer two different add-ons for your ticket. The punting add-on, £25, allows you to arrive at the Ball in quintessential Oxford fashion - in a chauffeured punt, complete with a bottle of champagne. The dining add-on, £50, permits entry into a lavish banquet in Christ Church hall, consisting of several courses of exquisite food, paired with free-flowing wine. This banquet takes place before the Ball commences.

Is the Ball going to be sustainable?

Sustainability is an important issue for the Ball committee, and we’ve ensured it is a priority for all parties involved in making this Ball happen. We’re proud to announce that this Ball will be the most sustainable Ball Christ Church has ever hosted. We’ll be announcing more about our commitment to sustainability as we approach the Ball.

Is the Ball accessible to all?

Yes! We’ve worked closely with the college to ensure that all students at Christ Church are able to attend the Ball. Please see your email for information regarding our access scheme, and don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.

Can I bring a guest?

Due to the unprecedented scale of this year’s Ball, we aren’t able to offer guest tickets to students anymore.
